A Major Upgrade Ahead: American Express Platinum Cards Get a Refresh

More than forty years ago, American Express introduced the Platinum Card, setting a new standard for premium credit cards. Today, the company is revamping its flagship offering to cater to the evolving needs of its customers, particularly younger generations like Millennials and Gen Z.

According to Howard Grosfield, Group President, U.S. Consumer Services, “Platinum Card benefits and services resonate across generations.” This sentiment holds true, as these demographic groups accounted for 35% of total U.S. Consumer spending last quarter. The Amex Platinum Card update aims to take its customers to a new level by enhancing its travel, dining, and lifestyle benefits, while also introducing fresh design elements.

The new upgrades will apply to both the US consumer and business Platinum cards. Although details on specific changes are scarce, it’s clear that American Express is doubling down on existing perks, such as access to its extensive global lounge network – boasting over 1,550 lounges in more than 500 airports worldwide. In fact, three new Centurion Lounges will soon open globally: Newark, New Jersey; Salt Lake City, Utah; and Tokyo, Japan.

American Express CEO Steve Squeri has stated plans to attract high-spending Millennials and Gen Z consumers to the company’s elite customer base.
