Severe Thunderstorm Warning Issued for Larimer and Weld Counties: Take Immediate Action

A powerful storm system is bearing down on the region, threatening to unleash damaging winds and large hail. As of 2:53 p.m. May 18, a severe thunderstorm warning has been issued by the National Weather Service in Denver, covering Larimer and Weld counties.

The warning signals that the area can expect winds as strong as 60 mph, with ping pong ball-sized hail and potentially catastrophic damage. “Seek shelter inside a well-built structure and stay away from windows,” warns officials. With such powerful forces at play, it’s essential to take immediate action to ensure safety.

The National Weather Service has issued a statement outlining the storm’s trajectory: “Severe thunderstorms were located along a line from near Natural Fort to 6 miles north of Severance, or along a line from 12 miles southwest of Cheyenne to 12 miles northeast of Fort Collins.” The storms are moving northeast at 20 mph, leaving little time for preparation.

So, what is a severe thunderstorm warning? In simple terms, it means the area is experiencing or will soon experience a storm with winds exceeding 58 mph or hail larger than an inch in diameter. This level of intensity can cause widespread destruction and put people’s lives at risk.

As the storms approach, residents are advised to take the following precautions:

* Stay indoors and away from windows

* Keep a battery-powered weather radio nearby in case of power loss

* Bring pets inside to avoid injury or stress

* Secure loose objects outside to prevent them from becoming deadly flying debris

The warning also extends to outdoor activities: “Postpone outdoor plans until the storms have passed.” With winds as strong as 60 mph, it’s crucial to prioritize safety above all else.

As we wait for the storm to pass, a question remains: Are you prepared for the unexpected? Take this opportunity to review your emergency plan and ensure that everyone in your household knows what to do in case of severe weather.

Only time will tell when the storms have passed, but with caution and preparation, residents can ride out the tempest.
