Players that are new to the franchise will have to unlock the original cast in Overwatch 2, so they won’t be playable on launch day.
According to Destructoid, this information can be found in a brand new Overwatch 2 blog post. Blizzard claims in it that a common complaint about Overwatch is that it is too complex for beginning players due to the large number of heroes and game modes available. To accommodate players of Overwatch 2 who have never played the original game, the development team has incorporated a new First Time User Experience (FTUE).
This criticism has been fixed in the newly updated FTUE. First, users will have to unlock the game’s modes and chat features, which Blizzard promises will happen “rapidly” in the article. Destructoid claims that after “roughly 100 rounds,” users will be able to access the original Overwatch heroes. Keep in mind that this only applies to the characters from the first game; in Overwatch 2, new heroes will be obtainable by means of a battle pass.
Winning 50 matches in Quick Play will get you access to Competitive Play. Blizzard, however, assures us that “most FTUE restrictions are lifted while in a group,” meaning that fresh faces may immediately form a squad with their pals and get into nearly any game mode. However, this rule does not apply to competitive.
The new FTUE procedure “not only facilitates player participation in the enjoyment, but also serves as an effective deterrent against disruptive behaviour and cheating,” as the blog puts it. “Time is money in FTUE, and it takes a while to have all the game’s features unlocked. Winning matches is required to gain entry to the Competitive mode. By delaying the availability of community-wide communication tools like voice chat and match chat, FTUE ensures that disruptive players have less of an immediate impact on the game as a whole. New accounts created by cheats or disruptive players will have to go through this before they can access other game modes, giving us an opportunity to catch them in the act.”
Blizzard claims that you can skip the First Time User Experience if you already have Overwatch playtime on your account or if you purchased the Watchpoint Pack.
