Jerry West was born in Chelyan, West Virginia in 1938, the fifth of six children to Cecil and Howard West. West’s older brother David was killed in the Korean War, and the loss caused him to become withdrawn and shy as a child. From 1952 to 1956, he was a student at East Bank High School and a basketball player for coach Duke Shaver. In a short amount of time, West was named the team’s captain and was given the starting small forward position. His career highlights include being named to the All-State team four times (1953–1956) and the All-American team for one season (1956). As head coach in 1956, West led his high school to a state title.
He led the West Virginia Mountaineers to the 1959 NCAA championship game as the team’s quarterback. Despite the loss, West was honoured as the game’s most valuable player. The following year, the Minneapolis Lakers selected him with the second overall pick in the 1960 NBA Draft.
Among NBA greats, Jerry West ranks high in terms of his list of accomplishments. After 14 years with the Los Angeles Lakers, he was elected into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 1980 and named one of the NBA’s 50 Greatest Players in 1996. Fourteen times during his career, he was chosen for the NBA All-Star Team. He is the first player in NBA history to be named Finals MVP despite his team’s failure to win the championship.
West became the head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers in 1976–1977. After West’s coaching career ended, he spent three years as a scout before being promoted to general manager of the Los Angeles Lakers. The Grizzlies made the playoffs for the first time in their history after West was recruited as general manager in 2002. During his time as general manager for both the Lakers and the Grizzlies, West was honoured with the NBA’s Executive of the Year award on two separate occasions. West, who formerly served as general manager, is now a board member for the NBA’s Golden State Warriors. He joined the Los Angeles Clippers’ board of directors in 2017, and has served there ever since.
